![]() Optimal Streaming QualityĪbout 220.67 million people worldwide actively use Netflix each month. Netflix AI generates thumbnails by annotating and ranking hundreds of frames taken from a preexisting movie or TV program to determine which thumbnails are most likely to prompt a click from users. Over time, Netflix realized that it wasn't enough to rely on titles it also had to provide visually appealing thumbnails to entice viewers. ![]() The thumbnail alone is enough for many viewers to determine whether or not they should watch the video in question. The user places great importance on the thumbnail, which is becoming an extremely prevalent trend in modern times. The following are some of the numerous applications of AI, data science, and machine learning at Netflix: Thumbnail Personalization It's fascinating how Netflix applies AI/Data Science/ML to running its operations, such as by implementing algorithms to provide movie recommendations and using AI to guarantee high-quality streaming even at reduced bandwidths. Use Cases of AI/Data Science/ML at Netflix Users can take charge of their multimedia streaming and customize their interactions owing to the system's ability to compile and recommend content based on their preferences. Netflix's AI considers your viewing habits and hobbies to provide Netflix recommendations. Simply said, the AI engine keeps an eye on the flow of information and sometimes takes over so that it may make judgments and suggestions at predetermined moments. Improvement in Netflix’s AI integration has made widespread individualization possible. Artificial intelligence has been put to use by Netflix to provide customers with the greatest possible service and experience. As long as Netflix can continue this trend of innovation while compensating subscriber losses and staying profitable, the company will remain an important voice in both the streaming market and the entertainment industry as a whole.Even now, over twenty years after it first launched, Netflix is still working to improve its service. This ability to adjust has continued in recent years with the success of the Netflix’s original content and increased focus on providing (local) content around the world. Furthermore, to push its users to the more profitable ad-supported tier, Netflix removed the basic subscription ad-free plan for customers in a few countries and will likely increase prices after the strike ends.įrom the beginning, it was Netflix’s ability to adapt to changing technologies and consumer demands which made it so successful. It not only laid off hundreds of employees in mid-2022, but also canceled several of their own productions after one or two seasons, and faced delays of new content amid the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. ![]() However, due to another major problem of subscription-based streaming services to stay or become profitable, Netflix announced, just like other direct-to-consumer businesses, several cost-cutting measures. The popularity of shows such as "House of Cards," "Stranger Things," and "Orange is the New Black" have made original programming integral to the company’s continued success. Worldwide, Netflix spent around 17 billion U.S. One of the main differences between Netflix and its competitors is its massive wealth of original content. That being said, far fewer people considered keeping the latter if they had to choose. ![]() Given these staggering numbers, it may seem hard to believe that other companies could make their mark in the subscription video-on-demand market, but Netflix competitors Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ have also carved out significant places within the SVOD landscape. users saying they would not drop the streaming service. In order to offset further losses, Netflix introduced a lower-cost ad-supported tier in November 2022, as well as approaches to curb account sharing in the beginning of 2023.ĭespite the recent losses in customers, Netflix subscribers are quite attached to the service, with nearly one in three U.S. However, as a result of a saturated SVOD market with ever-increasing costs, the streaming provider has recently struggled to retain customers in this region, outpaced by Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) in the second half of 2022. Although the company’s popularity is booming around the world, the United States and Canada have long been serving as the most important market for Netflix, amassing over 75 million subscribers at the end of the second quarter of 2023. ![]() “It updates the Luxo approach with a more elegant design, and it provides beautiful diffused light,” says Selbert, who notes the lamp has two streamlined arm joints and a shade that “stays cool to the touch and allows for easy adjustment.” Henry Ng, architect and co-founder of Ideas of Order, loves this lamp for its “minimalist lines, playful geometry, beautifully expressed mechanics, and ease of movement.” You can choose from two color temperatures (warm or cool), and the LED light itself has multiple brightness levels. Now he uses the NJP lamp, which was designed by Japan’s Nendo studio for Louis Poulsen as a reinterpretation of the classic architect’s lamp. They particularly appreciate that its adjustability is “very precise,” says Bui, and that “materially, the aluminum is pleasant to touch and the weight feels substantial, an unexpectedly nice thing to find in a desk lamp.” Plus, adds Bui, “The series has been around since the ’80s, and we think it has just about attained a classic design status.”Īdjustability: Articulated arm, 30-degree tilting head| Base: Standard, clamp, in-set pivot | Style: Task, 4 colors, select color temperature | Dimmable: Yes | Other: 3 light intensities, timerĬlifford Selbert, the founding partner of Selbert Perkins Design, says that he’s owned many desk lamps over the years, including the Luxo, which was his first. Lane Rick and Can Bui, co-founders and principals of collaborative architecture and design studio Office of Things, also use the Tolomeo in their office. Taken together, the piece is “a wonderful blend of clean lines, circular hinges, and exposed cabling,” according to Greenwood. Jane Greenwood, a principal at Kostow Greenwood Architects, says that its design sits “at the cusp of the technology boom” thanks to details like its aluminum material, fully adjustable articulated arm with polished die-cast aluminum joints, and tension-control knobs. Ming Thompson, a co-founder of architecture and interior-design firm Atelier Cho Thompson, is a fan of Anglepoise’s Type 75 lamp, noting it strikes “a balance between simple, modern forms and exposed mechanical elements,” and would be at home on both “an architect’s drafting table and a work-from-home desk.” With a spring-loaded articulated arm and adjustable shade, it comes with a CFL bulb and is available in several jaunty colors, including yellow ochre and Saxon blue.Īdjustability: Articulated arm, 360-degree rotating head | Base: Standard, clamp, in-set pivot | Style: Task, 3 colorsĪnother architect favorite is the Tolomeo table lamp, designed in 1989 by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina and made in Italy for Artemide. “Both are elegant in their own right, with a classic silhouette and form that they’ve kept fresh with new finishes and colors,” says Brian Wilson, a co-founder of Pair, an office-furniture company based in San Francisco. ![]() As architect Mei Lun Xue puts it, “Anglepoise lamps are super-classic and look good everywhere.” The two most popular models are the Original 1227 Task light designed in 1935, and the more modern Type 75, which is a bit more streamlined and received slightly more nods from our panelists. And if you’re looking for other types of lamps, visit our Lighting District for a roundup of our 100 favorite lighting implements.Īdjustability: Articulated arm, head | Base: Standard | Style: Task, 10 colorsīritish company Anglepoise has been making task lamps since the 1930s, and its various styles are the runaway favorite among the architects and interior designers we spoke to. Read on for their picks, which come at a range of prices and include a desk lamp for just about everyone. Here, I consulted 26 architects, interior designers, and other folks who value form as much as function. When seeking your own perfect lighting setup, there are some key elements you want to look for, like adjustability, design, and light source. It’s why certain architects swear by an industrial-style task lamp that hasn’t changed since the ’30s, while other design-world people might prefer sleeker, dimmable 3-D-printed options they can tote from room to room. ![]() How it looks is also an important consideration to make, and largely one that’s subjective. A desk lamp’s job is to illuminate your work space in the most efficient way possible. ![]() ![]() By that time, May had a new mount, christened “Diana.” She and her friends celebrated their purchases by having May, the group’s unofficial photographer, take Kodaks of them with their steeds.Īlthough May initially donned “an old shirt waist & skirt” to ride, she and her friends soon saw the benefit of specialized cycling attire: “short skirts” for women and knickers for men. May acquired her first “wheel,” dubbed “Isabella,” in 1893, but while she enjoyed a few “lovely” rides on her own, she confessed that she rode “so seldom” that she “got pretty tired.” This changed in 1895, when her friends began to borrow, rent, and finally purchase bicycles of their own. But it is clear from May’s diary and photographs that cycling most profoundly changed women’s lives, offering them unprecedented opportunities for physical mobility and social freedom. The cycling craze affected both men and women in May’s social circle, which included her brother Claude and his coworker John Constantine “Con” Hillman her friend Helen Elizabeth “Ned” Dutcher and her fiancé, Will Orchard sisters Alice, Emma, Mary, and Nellie MacArthur siblings Charlotte (“Chat”), Frank, Hamilton, Helen, and Katharine (“Kate”) Davis sisters Agnes, Florence, Mabel, and Mary Rogers and neighbors Mary “Matie” Hawley, Edith Joiner, and Lura Davis. But most of all, they thoroughly enjoyed the new freedoms offered by bicycles, which granted them increased mobility, offered new opportunities for outdoor recreation, and led to more spontaneous socializing in both mixed-gender and same-sex groups. ![]() In the mid-1890s, May and her friends-all middle-class, white, single professionals in their twenties and thirties-went “bicycle-crazy.” They eagerly purchased and compared bicycles, wholeheartedly adopted new fashions adapted to cycling, and enthusiastically supported new spectator sports featuring bicycles, such as races and expositions. While feminists and physicians debated the benefits of the bicycle, the diaries and photographs of one quintessential “New Woman,” May Bragdon, provide greater insight into how this social trend affected daily life. Dickinson warned against the sensual possibilities of cycling. Anthony proclaimed that the bicycle has “done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.” More cautiously, gynecologist Robert L. Victorian social commentators often remarked upon the ways in which bicycles transformed women’s lives. That same year, Bicycling for Ladies offered both practical and fashionable tips for female cyclists. “The typical girl of the present period is the bicycle girl,” announced Ladies’ World in 1896. Popular publications reinforced the association between women and cycling. Illustrator Charles Dana Gibson popularized the image of the turn-of-the-century’s liberated woman with his drawings of the “Gibson Girl,” who eagerly engaged in sports. Public discussions of cycling revolved around the “New Woman,” invariably depicted as young, white, and attractive. But above all, cycling was a quintessentially feminine pursuit indeed, the “safety” bike featured a dropped frame that accommodated women’s long skirts.Īlthough members of other groups certainly cycled, the prototypical cyclist in Victorian America was a well-to-do white woman. The high cost of bicycles in the 1890s-between $25 and $50 for a new “wheel,” the equivalent of $800 to $1600 today-was prohibitive for working-class Americans. ![]() Whatever their race or ethnicity, only well-to-do Americans could afford to take up cycling. Although a few intrepid athletes had experimented with the “pennyfarthing” bicycle earlier, in the late 1880s, the introduction of the “safety” bike-featuring pneumatic wheels of the same size-vastly expanded the popularity of “wheeling.” By the mid-1890s, estimates of the number of US bicyclists ranged between 2 and 4 million. Thanks in part to the widespread adoption of the bicycle, the late nineteenth century represented a new era of “freedom & exhilaration” for American women, especially well-to-do white women like May Bragdon and her friends. The gorgeously bright moon & stars & the sense of freedom & exhilaration of the wheel’s motion!” “The still, dewy night-the out door odors-the white smooth ro. After dinner, the group mounted their bicycles and rode to Ontario Beach Park, arriving just at sunset for a performance of “Pinafore” at the pavilion, where they also relished “the stars & gorgeous moon & colored lights & flowers & sweet air!” Afterward, May and her companions returned home on their “wheels.” “After the first long hill it was simply inexpressibly fine,” May gushed in the pages of her diary that night. On August 30, 1895, May Bragdon and her friends enjoyed “a perfectly delightful day” in and around Rochester, New York. ![]() Once we got to our table it was evident our server was fairly new (Still, no biggie, we used to be servers, we can look past that). ![]() Upon arriving it was a 30 minute wait (no biggie, but the place was very empty).
