![]() "Fik-shun" Stegall is an adorable Nutcracker, and the creepy grandfather Drosselmeyer character gets an upgrade when played by a charismatic young woman. The Mouse King (Jean Sok) is an incredible disabled dancer who uses crutches in his acrobatic breaking. ![]() The dancers are some of the world's best in hip-hop, breakdancing, popping and locking, and more. In in The Hip Hop Nutcracker the hip-hop-ified versions of Tchaikovsky's 1890s masterpiece are super fun (including a superb slow jam version of "March of the Toy Soldiers"). Just like the original ballet Nutcracker, the story here doesn't make much sense also like the original Nutcracker, the dancing and music is so spectacular, the plot is kind of beside the point. They share a kiss at midnight and the whole neighborhood dances in celebration. Upon waking, Maria-Clara finds that (spoiler alert!) the magic worked, and her parents have fallen back in love. She also dreams that the magic of dance will bring her parents back together. Maria-Clara falls asleep on a park bench and dreams hip-hop dance versions of the classic Nutcracker characters: mice and soldiers, snowflakes, tea, chocolate, and candy canes. Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker (Du-Shant "Fik-shun" Stegall) feel a spark of love and dance together. Drosselmeyer puts the Nutcracker (a sidewalk pushcart vendor selling nuts) in Maria-Clara's path. The toymaker Drosselmeyer (Comfort Fedoke) sees that Maria-Clara is upset and decides to intervene with her magic. She desperately wants her parents to get back together and share a New Year's kiss. Teenager Maria-Clara (Caché Melvin) lives in New York City and is celebrating the New Year with her block. Joseph "Rev Run" Simmons of Run DMC fame raps the story's narration. As the name suggests, the show remixes the classical ballet's score, storyline, and setting. THE HIP HOP NUTCRACKER is a stage show version of the beloved ballet that has been adapted for the small screen.
